PE at Pucklechurch

Curriculum Intent

Our vision is for all children at Pucklechurch Primary to be given an equal opportunity to develop their physical literacy in an inclusive environment that supports and promotes their physical, social and mental well-being.

We strive for every child to be:

-        Competent and confident in their physical ability;

-        Competitive, yet gracious, at their own level;

-        Passionate about sport and being active and develop a positive attitude to maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle.

At Pucklechurch Primary School, Physical Education (PE) and Sport play an integral role in making our vision statement a reality for pupils, of all abilities. We want them to push themselves, to have a fearless approach in all aspects of their learning; setting their own goals and evaluating their own progress. Consequently this encourages them to try new sports, strategies, techniques and methods allowing them to experiment and set their own challenges.

Curriculum Implementation

At Pucklechurch Primary School we use a range of facilities such as the school field, playground, netball courts and sports hall to deliver our lessons. Children experience a wide range activities throughout the year, ranging from gym and dance to athletics and outdoor and adventurous activities (OAA).

In KS1, children are taught to:

- master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility, co-ordination, and to begin to apply these in a range of activities;

- participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending;

- perform dances using simple movement patterns.

In KS2, children are taught to:

- use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and combination;

- play competitive games (e.g. badminton, basketball, cricket, hockey, football, tennis, rounders and netball), and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending;

- develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance;

- perform dances using a range of movement patterns;

- take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team;

- compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

Children are exposed to one lesson a week from the Real PE scheme, which develops children’s fundamental skills such as agility, balance and co-ordination. They will also experience a more traditional-style lesson, where they will be able to put their fundamental skills into practise and showcase their talent and ability in a more competitive approach.

On top of this, we take part in the Daily Mile every day - please see our separate page for more details!

We have welcomed the Government’s announcement to provide additional funding until 2020 to improve provision of PE and Sport in primary schools. This funding enables us to develop the provision of PE in primary schools and is used to improve the sporting opportunities that are given to children.

real PE

real PE is a unique, child-centred approach, which recognises the key abilities children need to be successful within PE and Sport across the curriculum. It aims to teach children a range of skills (shown on the cogs below) that can be used in all areas of their learning and within the traditional sports they play. real PE lessons are delivered once a week and offer children a range of engaging experiences - such as seated volleyball and themed games - that can help children to develop the fundamental skills they need to be successful in sport!

Race for Life 2019

On Friday 21st June 2019, Pucklechurch Primary School took part in the Race for Life.

More than 350km were ran by the children and staff, across all ages. The children really stepped up to the challenge and thoroughly enjoyed the day. We raised over £300 - well done Pucklechurch!
